At the Edge of the Harvest: A Seasonal Grazing Table

There’s something special about the transition from summer to fall. Farmers markets are still filled with late-season favorites like tomatoes and peaches, while apples, warm spices, and cozy flavors begin making their way back to the table. It’s the perfect time to gather friends, slow down, and enjoy a spread that captures the best of both seasons.

To inspire your next gathering, we turned to Marissa Mullen of That Cheese Plate, known for her beautifully styled grazing tables and approachable entertaining tips. Using her signature APPS Method, Marissa shares how to create a seasonal spread that feels abundant, inviting, and effortless, complete with hosting ideas, flavor pairings, and thoughtful presentation tips.

While hosting, I love to let the seasons guide the menu and tablescape. As summer begins to fade into fall, we're in a sweet spot that I like to call the edge of the harvest. Farmer’s markets are still overflowing with tomatoes and stone fruit, but there’s a shift in the air and that first craving for pumpkin spice. It’s the moment when fresh ingredients begin to take on the warmth of the season ahead.

Whenever I'm hosting, I use my signature APPS Method. Think of it like your checklist behind a successful snacky party. The acronym stands for Ambiance, Presentation, Pairings and Space. It's the easiest way to create a spread that feels welcoming, abundant and effortless!

A: Ambiance

The best gatherings always begin with the feeling you want to create. At the edge of the harvest, I lean into everything that makes this season feel lush and inviting. Think natural textures, warm earthy colors and abundant colorful florals. I used sunflowers as a focal point, as well as bundles of fresh apples and peaches on the table itself for decoration. I always love to add candles to my tablescape as well, to set the mood with a warm light. Taper candles are a fun way to play with height and color, while tea lights bring some glow to guide your eyes to the food.

P: Presentation

Presentation highlights how the appetizers are plated and styled. For this spread, I served a colorful late-summer panzanella salad in Le Creuset’s Pumpkin Serving Bowl. This bowl is inspired by the timeless shape of an heirloom French pumpkin. Its generous 4-quart capacity makes it perfect for family-style dishes like hearty salads, pastas and seasonal sides. Next, I added a baked brie topped with fresh peaches, hot honey and spiced walnuts in the Pumpkin Mini Cocotte. One of my favorite things about cocottes is that they go straight from the oven to the table, keeping warm dishes ready for guests to enjoy. From there, I built around those larger pieces with cheeses, charcuterie, olives, fresh fruit and plenty of bread and crackers arranged on the Le Creuset Butcher Block. A large wooden board adds warmth and natural texture to the table. I filled the French Oak Leaf Bowls with chips and crackers and jams; they're the perfect size for a little something.

P: Pairings

For this spread, I built the menu around ingredients that naturally bridge summer and fall: a panzanella salad with end-of-season tomatoes and charred zucchini, baked brie with grilled peaches and spiced pecans, and an overflowing cheese board with sharp cheese and apple butter. I always try to offer a variety of flavors and textures so there's something for everyone. The bright panzanella offers a fresh contrast to richer cheeses and charcuterie, while crisp crackers, fresh fruit and herbs create endless combinations.

S: Space

A beautiful grazing table deserves a thoughtful location. Ideally, position the table somewhere that feels like a natural gathering point, with enough space for people to comfortably browse from multiple sides without creating bottlenecks. For this gathering, I hosted six guests, so there was plenty of seating nearby. I styled the grazing table in the dining area, with the living room just steps away, allowing guests to build a plate before settling onto the couch or gathering around the coffee table to continue the conversation. Keeping seating close to the food encourages people to linger rather than feeling like they need to stand with a plate in hand all evening.

Le Creuset's Pumpkin Collection feels so fitting this transitional time of year. From the colors to the shapes, each piece captures the spirit of the autumnal season while remaining beautifully functional.
