Dutch Oven Oval Product - Features and Benefits

      ENAMELED CAST IRON

Since 1925, Le Creuset cast iron has been recognized for its strength and durability. Cast individually in sand molds, then hand-inspected by French artisans, each piece represents a rich heritage and continues a tradition of lasting, authentic design.

      Heat Retention

Cast iron distributes heat slowly and evenly over the entire vessel, making it ideal for all forms of cooking, whether slow-cooking, roasting, searing, stir-frying or baking.

      Smooth Interior Enamel

The glass-like finish in our ovens and braisers promotes caramelization, resists staining and prevents sticking to make cleanup easy.

      Black Interior Enamel

The black interior of our skillets is specially formulated for high-temperature cooking, and does not require seasoning.

We received the 6.75 quart dutch oven as a wedding gift. It has been my go-to cooking tool for fall dishes. It does a fantastic job evenly heating food and retaining moisture for juicy cuts of meat. The short ribs I've braised fall right off the bone. I've used it primarily for cooking whole chickens, pot roasts, and braising both country style pork ribs and beef short ribs. This size dutch oven makes plenty of food for our family and there are typically leftovers for lunch throughout the week. I can easily fit a 6.5 pound chicken on a bed of root vegetables. The weight may be too much for some but as a guy I have no problem with the weight of the dutch oven and whatever it is that I'm cooking. My wife handles cleaning and the dutch oven still looks more or less unused so it definitely cleans up nicely. There are still plenty of dishes I want to try so the versatility is quite impressive! The only downside is most dishes take 2+ hours so using the dutch oven during the work week can be a challenge. It's so worth it though when you take that first bite.

I bought this french oven about 5 years ago and use it mainly in the cooler months for stews, soups, braising meats, etc. I love the color and it held up well for the first several years, although I admittedly did not use it very often. Last year, I decided to start making more one pot meals, including a lot of soups, so I started using it more often (~2-3 times/month). A couple of months ago, I noticed small chip on the bottom interior of the pot. I continued to use a couple more times, and the chip started getting larger (I guess that means someone ate enamel?) and it started to crack. I called the warranty department, and I have to echo some of the other reviewers. The woman that answered was very curt, bordering on rude. She told me that I could send it in, but that there was no guarantee it would actually be covered under warranty (even though I have followed the use and care instructions to a "T"). She also told me that *IF* they determined it was defective, they could not guarantee the replacement would even be close in color. I am sending it in anyway, because I don't want to ingest any more enamel. I can only hope that they will do the right thing and they will honor my requested color choices (I gave them a list of colors I could live with if mine was not available). For such a high end/expensive product line, it is really ridiculous that their phone reps have such poor customer service skills. Since I have many other Le Creuset pieces that are still holding up well, I will continue to recommend this line. However, it should be noted that all of my other pieces are well over 10 years old (one is over 20!), so I am hoping they have not reduced quality in recent years. I guess I will find out shortly...

Comments about Le Creuset Oval Dutch Oven:

I chose the 9.5 quart oval in Aubergine.

I've used it almost daily for the past two weeks to make roasts, stews, chili, baked casseroles, and macaroni & cheese. I've also used it for sautéing vegetables and meats.

Since cast iron heats so evenly, it's best to keep the range set on medium or below, especially with enameled cast-iron because high temperatures can damage your cookware.

Also, I wouldn't use any metal utensils because of the enameled surface. I have only used silicone utensils when cooking in this pot.

Even with baked-on cheese, this Dutch oven is extremely easy to clean! The longest I have soaked it for is about 15 minutes, and the baked-on food just wiped right off with a sponge. I love that I don't have to take the extra steps to rub the pot down with oil (like with my regular non-enameled cast-iron pieces).

Comments about Le Creuset Oval Dutch Oven:

Cooked a 15 lb turkey from my deep freeze (bought on sale after Thanksgiving). Lined the bottom with rough chopped onions, celery, carrots, and peppers. Sat the bird on top and baked at 325 degrees F for 2 hours.. removing the lid for an additional hour, basting with butter infused with fresh rosemary, thyme, sage, and lots of garlic. Once done, I removed the turkey to rest.. What was left was a condensed, very herbaceous and favorable turkey stock which I then reduced and used as a sauce. I cut away the breast and sliced for serving as well as the legs.. I placed the remaining carcass, and strained veggies, back in the pot adding a gallon of water.. into the oven for another hour or so. This ended up as, what I call, "poultry stock" which I freeze and use when needed.. This is a heavy pot, especially when loaded, but worth it.. I challenge anyone to get genuine compliments on their roasted turkey.. I did!!!

Comments about Le Creuset Oval Dutch Oven:

I received this as a gift about seven years ago and I use it all the time. I make everything from a bolognese sauce to chicken noodle soup. I love it, heats evenly, does not warp, you can put it the oven and not worry about the handle. The pan still looks good after many years of constant use. The only problem I have is that it is quite heavy, so if lifting is a problem for you then take that into account. I would say if you are really into cooking or just starting out, it is worth the initial investment and will pay for itself overtime. It will always look good and work just as well as when you first brought it home years later. How many of us can say that?

Needed a new stock pot for holiday cooking. Made homemade turkey stock to use in both oyster dressing and giblet gravy. Was truly delish. While drying it , as a single person with no children I realized what it must be like to bath a child. Had it in my arms drying it so carefully. Just don't drop baby. Lol happy holidays.

I just received my second of this piece. The first version of this piece was my mother's. I think it was purchased about 50+ years ago. She used it for everything from soups to roasts and everything in between. We did not have a lot of money and she'd save up forever to buy a piece of this cookware, telling me that it was money well spent and that it would last a lifetime. She was right. I learned how to cook in LeCreuset and am still using the pieces she bought 50 years ago. If this piece doesn't have a roast of some sort in it every week, I can assure you, the world will come to a screeching halt. This is without a doubt, the finest cookware money can buy and this particular piece is my favorite. Take care of it and it will last many lifetimes. Bon Appetit.
